SUSTAINABLE Housing Initiative

Kanehsatake’s current housing stock is aging and faces serious issues such as mold, structural deterioration, and leaky roofs, making maintenance costs unsustainable. To develop new sustainable social housing that fits the community’s needs and vision, a multi-housing sustainable pilot project is ongoing, prioritizing sustainability and capacity building, and integrating infrastructure development for water treatment and electricity.

This pilot project includes the development of a specialized construction AEP with retroactive Red Seal credits. The curriculum is currently being built and an information session will be held in July 2025 (date to be confirmed). Interested in learning the trade? Contact us!

Approach

The project includes a feasibility study that looks at sustainable housing options which offer long-term durability and reduced upkeep.

Engagements and workshops are being held to gather input on key aspects of the project, including construction materials, sustainability considerations, and cultural design elements.

What if the next homes built in KANEHSATAKE were not only eco-friendly and long-lasting, but built by our own people, students and workers trained right here at home?

More than a simple construction project, this is a chance to build homes that are long-lasting, environmentally friendly, and resilient to damage, while reflecting our culture, values, and needs.

This pilot project integrates a training and certification component, with the intent of having community members trained and hired on the project, so that these homes and future homes in Kanehsatake are built for our people and by our people.
